This novel written during Reconstruction, about the Civil War, was a surprisingly easy read. A minor stumbling block was reading the dialect that the slaves used. That being said, the great thing about this book was that there was NO condescension shown toward the slaves by the author or the heroine. The plot centers around the Union Army coming to a plantation in the South, and it was not only tensely exciting, but accurate. The author deserves my belated respect.
Mr. Roe has a wonderful writing style, and easily caught my attention as I began the book. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that I was a little let down with the ending.
